Racing With A Porcupine
Racing takes on a whole new meaning when you pair up with a porcupine. This newspaper article shares all the crazy shenanigans that are involved.
In addition to my narrative work, I am able to bring a sense of humor into my writing because I understand how humor can build a connection with my readers. I like to use it to lower barriers and make meaningful content memorable. My humor style is gentle, intelligent, and absent of sarcasm or demeaning attitudes, so I can create a connection with the audience. This skill is demonstrated in this story.
Reggie
An unruly rooster that roams the neighborhood. Find out what crazy shenanigans he stirs up.
I wrote this for a blog post.
One of my strongest writing skills is narrative writing. I understand how to take a simple subject or situation and turn it into an engaging story. I focus on creating stories that have a deep meaning but are expressed through light, nonjudgmental attitudes and I use my voice, tone, and pacing strategically. This story about Reggie showcases this ability.
This I Believe - Single Tasking
Even within a busy, demanding life, moments of presence are always available. The same day that feels overwhelming can be turned into a day with moments of calm, connection, and meaning.
The difference is not what is happening around you, but what is being noticed by you.
In this piece, I use demonstrate my use of pacing. I start the writing with a faster speed to match the emotion I am describing, then I change that pace into a slow and mindful pace to invite the reader to join me in the emotion of peace.
The Switch
An excerpt from a fictional short story I wrote about teenage boys and their county go kart race.
This writing piece is a great example of my narrative writing abilities and showcases how I "show and not tell" the story. It also features my dialogue skills and how I create emotion through different parts of the chapter.
The Commencement Speech
A short and sweet, college feel-good commencement speech.
In this speech, I create emotion and blend past experiences into meaningful ideas that resonate with the listeners. I do this in a simple way that feels safe and memorable yet keeps things short for easy listening.
